Intent

At Pear Tree Primary School, our Science Intent is to foster curiosity through an ambitious, sequenced curriculum. Starting with clear foundations in Reception, we ensure pupils build detailed, connected knowledge by consistently linking new concepts to prior learning.

Pupils work as scientists—observing, pattern-seeking, classifying, and researching—while using precise vocabulary to explain phenomena. Our inclusive approach ensures all children, including those with SEND, access the same curriculum through scaffolded support and the pre-teaching of key concepts.

By integrating science with Geography, Maths, and English, and providing rich extra-curricular experiences, we enhance our pupils' cultural capital. These opportunities develop well-rounded citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their next stage of education and beyond.

Implementation

We use the Plymouth Science scheme of work that carefully maps both substantive and disciplinary knowledge over EYFS, KS1 and KS2. Plans identify the key objectives in each topic in conjunction with detailed practical lessons which focus on one of the five enquiry approaches. The scheme is progressive allowing pupils to build on their knowledge, skills and understanding. Working scientifically skills are taught explicitly by the teachers, supporting the children to become more independent and accurate scientists as they develop their understanding and independence of how to work scientifically. These principles are carefully interwoven in lessons and by the end of their KS2 journey, children should be confident to approach a line of enquiry independently and scientifically.
