Intent

Pear Tree Primary School is committed to delivering a coherent, ambitious and inclusive mathematics curriculum through a Teaching for Mastery approach. We believe all pupils can achieve and enjoy mathematics with high-quality teaching, appropriate support and sufficient time. Our aim is for every child to develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to build on prior learning without the need for repeated re-teaching.

In the early years and Key Stage 1, we prioritise the secure recall of number bonds and key facts as the foundation for future learning. Younger pupils are closely monitored and receive timely, targeted support to prevent gaps from developing, reducing the need for intervention at the end of Key Stage 2.

Our carefully sequenced, spiral curriculum revisits and deepens key concepts over time, supporting long-term retention and enabling pupils to make meaningful connections. We prioritise depth over pace, ensuring lessons provide time for thinking, discussion and purposeful practice through high-quality tasks.

We have high expectations for all pupils. All learners access the same core content, supported through scaffolds, manipulatives and precise questioning. Challenge is achieved through depth, not acceleration, enabling all pupils to progress together.

Teaching focuses equally on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Pupils are routinely expected to explain their thinking, justify methods and apply knowledge across contexts, drawing on secure recall and making connections within mathematics. Key facts, including times tables, are explicitly taught and regularly practised.

Our curriculum enables pupils to apply mathematics across number, measurement, geometry, algebra, statistics and probability, developing their ability to estimate, interpret and solve routine and non-routine problems.

Teaching is informed by evidence-based practice, including guidance from the Education Endowment Foundation. Ongoing assessment ensures misconceptions are addressed swiftly. Continuous professional development supports all staff to deliver consistent, high-quality teaching.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are well prepared for the transition to Year 7, with secure fluency, conceptual understanding and confidence in applying their knowledge.

Ultimately, we aim for all pupils to leave Pear Tree Primary School with a strong mathematical foundation, the ability to think critically and solve problems, and the confidence to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.
