Intent

The intent of the geography curriculum is to foster a lifelong love of learning about the world, encouraging curiosity and exploration of both human and physical geography. It aims to develop informed and responsible global citizens who understand the interconnectedness of local and global environments, while instilling a strong sense of place and identity through the study of local geography.

Pupils will gain an understanding of key geographical features, including landforms, climate, ecosystems, and urban development, alongside developing map skills and spatial awareness through both traditional and digital tools.

The curriculum promotes critical thinking and problem-solving through the analysis of geographical data and case studies, while also enhancing communication skills through discussion and the presentation of findings on local and global issues.

Progression is carefully structured, with Key Stage 1 introducing basic geographical concepts, local features, and simple map skills, and Key Stage 2 building on this to explore diverse global regions, human–environment interactions, and more advanced map-reading skills.

The curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, can access and succeed through appropriate adaptations and scaffolding while maintaining high expectations. It is designed to be engaging and interactive, emphasising the importance of understanding how human and physical features shape our world, and fostering a strong connection to the local area so that pupils can explore and appreciate their immediate environment.
