History

Intent

The intent of the history curriculum is to cultivate a deep understanding of historical events, figures, and contexts, enabling students to appreciate their significance in shaping the present and future. It aims to foster critical thinking and enquiry skills through the exploration of diverse historical narratives, encouraging students to question, investigate, and evaluate evidence.

The curriculum seeks to instil a sense of identity and belonging by connecting students with local history and heritage, while also developing their chronological understanding so they can place events in context and recognise cause and effect.

Pupils will acquire key historical knowledge of significant events, periods, and individuals in both local and national history, alongside enhancing their analytical skills through the evaluation of sources and interpretations. Communication skills will be promoted through discussion, presentation, and written reflection.

Progression is carefully structured, beginning in the Early Years and Early Key Stage 1 with personal history and local events, developing in Late Key Stage 1 to broader themes and figures, and extending in Key Stage 2 to in-depth study of British and world history with clear chronological and thematic links.

The curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, can succeed through appropriate adaptations and support while maintaining high expectations. It is coherently sequenced in chronological order, enriched by recurring golden threads such as change and continuity, and designed to be engaging and meaningful, with a strong emphasis on local history to deepen students’ connection to their community and develop essential historical skills.
